SCHOTT Solar manufactures 250,000th thin film module in Jena

·           Company facility on firm footing due to stable production and high degree of efficiency

·           ASI® technology successfully developed further

Mainz, March 4, 2009 – SCHOTT Solar AG has successfully ramped up its thin film production at its Jena facility – by last week a total of 250,000 solar modules had left the production line. The Company started the production of ASI modules at the new facility in Jena a year ago, building up a second mainstay in addition to its wafer-based technology.

“We are very satisfied with this result, which would not have been possible without the energetic efforts made by our manufacturing manager Bertram Eichhorn and the entire team” noted Dr. Robert Kuba, General Manager of SCHOTT Solar Thin Film GmbH on the occasion of the celebration of 250,000 ASI solar modules being produced in Jena. “Manufacturing on our new thin film production line is developing well and the degree of efficiency we’ve achieved is also impressive – we only increased the power output of our ASI modules up to 100 Watts stabilized output power in October of last year” he continues. The ASI® thin film modules from Jena have nominal output powers between 86 and 100 Watts, and already produce environmentally-friendly electricity.

Dr. Martin Heming, CEO of SCHOTT Solar AG, points out the many advantages of thin film technology: “Due to their good scattered light properties and their interconnection capabilities, our SCHOTT ASI series modules are perfect for roofs that are not optimally aligned to the south or that have an extreme angle of inclination. In addition, thin film technology uses raw materials extremely sparingly, needing less than 0.1 gram of silicon per Watt of module power output. As a result, the module exhibits an excellent CO2 balance.”

SCHOTT Solar is one of the pioneers of thin film technology. With an investment of around 75 million euros in the ultramodern thin film production line at its Jena facility, SCHOTT Solar has created 180 new jobs and set the stage for further growth.
